Social Media Changes – Discord

We launched the website a couple of months ago, and have just finished the second full journey since the site went live. It was a blast and we are looking forward to kicking off Coming of Age this August!

We built a social media area within this platform, and it’s really cool, but it isn’t as accessible as we would like it. For example, it doesn’t function well on mobile. We may explore having it as our own app down the road, but as of right now we want to continue doing what we love, running journeys, creating podcasts, videos, and interacting with our wonderful community.

We launched a Discord around the same time as the website, and it was intended as a temporary social media area. To our pleasant surprise, we’ve developed a wonderful community there and it has gradually grown. It has now become one of our favorite corners of the internet.

We have decided to lean into Discord as our social media platform. We have many content areas and have included Journey channels to continue the discussions. Those are free to all, so even if you are not subscribed, you’ll experience the journey with us.

We have even published a Discord Map, which will be a living area and will guide our community towards what is new. As the Discord grows, this page will grow as well.

We’ve heard from some people with concerns about Discord. We get it. We’ve heard them as well, and have either seen or heard stories about other servers. It was built more as a gaming rather than a film community. We remember hearing the same thing when we built the Criterion Now Facebook group, but that became another of our favorite corners of the internet. We’ve also heard that people can feel overwhelmed. Jill and Aaron are admins and will help with that, and we have moderators. We think you’ll get used to it, and you can participate as much or as little as you want.
