The Sky is Blue Friday 12/6/2024

Another week to celebrate film and what our friends have been doing. This week was Jill Blake’s birthday and a lot of cool people celebrated her. We also announced our first six guides, and just generally had a great time. Oh yeah, and it was just Monday that we had a live event watching The Last Waltz, which was a blast!

@biscuitkitten.bsky.social and @awest505.bsky.social are thrilled to announce our first six Guides! They will be leading Journeys and Online Classes in 2025.

In honor of re-watching the fabulous “Murder, My Sweet” (1944), here’s a great article about Dick Powell and his three successful careers in Hollywood: www.radioclassics.com/dick-powell-…

I’m in the middle of about 6 other books, including at least 2 essay collections and a stack of recent magazines I’m behind on, but I couldn’t resist this when I saw it at Kramer’s Books yesterday… edited by Wesley Morris!?

It wasn't that long ago when the words "Directed by Sammo Hung" would be just about the last thing one could imagine appearing on the cover of a Criterion Collection Blu-ray. Times have changed! I'm good with it.

Rating a movie isn’t an attempt at an objective measure of its quality. It should be an attempt to share your subjective experience of the film in a way that can start a conversation with another individual who almost certainly had an entirely different (yet similarly inexplicable) experience.

It's easy to forget that such intimate familiarity with our own (and others) faces – the pores, the teeth, the whites of the eyes – was a relatively new phenom when motion picture cameras first came about.

In celebration of our upcoming Sirkenheimer Journey, we collaborated with our good friend Caitlin Kuhwald on this incredible illustration of the exact moment in ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS when Cary Scott (played by Jane Wyman) realizes her children (and her busybody friends) are assholes.

My honest to goodness favorite part of Rope is the incredibly detailed New York backdrop behind the window that gradually goes from day to night.
